Imagine having the opportunity to stand in front of a television camera and declare your love for nursing. That’s just what happened to three individuals at tiny Lakeview College of Nursing in Danville, IL. Student Katie Marlatt, recent grad Erica Dixon, RN, and Sarah Rich Wheeler, DNS, RN, PMH, BC, LCPC, the school’s dean of nursing, all shined under the bright lights.
"It was neat to think that such a small school would have such a large impact by being featured on the Oxygen network," says Marlatt, student government president at Lakeview. "It was a great experience to be part of that."
Marlatt and several of her fellow Lakeview students were filmed in January for the show "Today’s Family," which aired on Oxygen earlier this month. The segment, called "Careers that are Rewarding," focused on the school and the voices of its students. It included gripping statistics on the pressing need for nurses, as well the history of Lakeview and its degree programs.
"I think nursing is a vital profession, and I was excited to get the word out there," says Dixon, who graduated from Lakeview this year and is now working as an ICU nurse as Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL. "I was happy for people to see Lakeview and the tremendous opportunities in nursing. The world needs good nurses."
Filming took place for about a day at the school’s campus. Nerves may get the better of most students about to be filmed for national TV, but when Dixon was approached by Wheeler to participate in an interview for the segment, she claims she wasn’t nervous at all.
"Instead of being nervous, I was very excited," says Dixon.
Under the bright camera lights, Dixon emphasized the opportunities offered at Lakeview and how her love of nursing—particularly intensive-care—inspired her to spread the word of the career she holds dear.
"It was great," she says. "Above all, I wanted people to consider nursing as a profession and recognize the tremendous experiences it offers."
In earlier years, Dixon was planning on attending medical school, but as she learned about nursing through friends who were nurses, she decided to switch gears. And she hasn’t looked back since.
"What changed my mind is what nursing offers instead of medicine," says Dixon. "In nursing, you care for the whole patient and have more quality time with the patient. It’s a whole process, and I hope more people will consider it as a career path."
Wheeler, who has been in nursing for 30+ years, feels the segment will help "celebrate the power and passion" of the nursing profession.
"To be in nursing, you must be passionate about it," says Wheeler. "Many people have that dream of wanting to be a nurse; you just have to find your niche."
CD copies of the segment were handed out to Lakeview students; both Dixon and Marlatt feel the segment was successful in highlighting the many benefits of Lakeview and the nursing world, and both say they would jump at the chance to get in front of the camera again.
"Overall, it was a very positive experience," says Dixon. "Everyone was very professional, and it was nice to be able to share our excitement of nursing with a larger community."

Before using e-cig… I felt my days were numbered…. I couldn’t quit with the present options available. I had a vision of this solution 5 years ago… Unfortunately… I found out about it in mid March just before Health Canada shut it down… Hey I have resorted to extraordinary action…. I now have my stash which should last me a few years now….. I was prepared to take a trip to China to stock up… but that has been averted… I am comfortible with the amount I have at the moment to get me through this BS.
