AAAHC standards in Chapter 17, Diagnostic and Other Imaging Services, D- 4,5 & 6, and Chapter 18, Radiation Oncology Treatment Services, D-2 address proper safety precautions for personnel, which should include medical staff. Your organization must determine whether personnel exposure badges are appropriate and monitor the badges as well.Although equipment suppliers may be a good resource for determining the appropriate badges and maintenance of them, their recommendations should be confirmed by the designated radiation safety individual that performs the periodic required safety testing and/or the radiologist or radiation oncologist or radiation safety officer who oversees the services provided. These recommendations should be in writing and permanently kept with the personnel exposure reports. The individual responsible (by title) for reviewing the exposure reports and notifying employees and medical staff of their periodic and cumulative exposure should be identified in the organization’s policies. At the time of the survey, the surveyor will discuss safety precautions as part of the survey and may ask to review the exposure records and the recommendations noted above as well as the contracts.
