There’s the documentation. Then there’s the care coordination. And don’t forget about searching for items and delivering them. So how much time is left for nurses to deliver actual patient care at the bedside?
According to a recent study in The Permanente Journal, not much time at all.
The study, which focused on 767 licensed nurses within 17 healthcare systems in 15 states, revealed that nurses devote more than 75% of their time to nursing practice but only about one-third of that in patient rooms. The biggest time crook during a 10-hour shift was documentation (about 2.5 hours per shift), followed by care coordination (86 minutes per shift). The study also found that nurses spent an average of 36 minutes per shift searching for items or waiting for items while they walked an average of 3.1 miles.
The research was supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
