Long, physical days take a toll on a nurse’s body. Difficult patients and dealing with stress take a toll on a nurse’s mind. Combine the two, and it’s easy to see why more than one-third of baby boomer nurses plan to change their jobs in the next one to three years, according to a recent AMN Healthcare survey.
The survey of 1,830 nurses ages 45-60 revealed that more than 33% are suffering from career burn out and plan to find a non-nursing job, work part-time, become a travel nurse, or simply retire by 2011. Fewer than half (43%) of those surveyed said they’d pick nursing if they had to do it all over again. Only slightly more respondents (48%) said they’d recommend the job to their children or other young people.
A silver lining to the survey showed that 58% surveyed said that physicians are trained to be more respectful of nurses today as compared to 10 or 20 years ago. To see full results from the survey, click here.
