Picking apart some polls

Here at StressedOutNurses.com, we’re not afraid to ask the tough questions. What’s your favorite dish at Thanksgiving dinner? How many text messages do you send each week? Are you going to make a New Year’s resolution this year? Yes, without these crucial facts, we’d be lost and confused. Okay, maybe not. But isn’t it fun to see what everyone thinks about these topics? Let’s take a closer look.

Over the past few months, we’ve posed some poll questions about everything from the World Series to holiday shopping. Let’s wrap up 2007 by taking a look at some of your responses:

  • Socially speaking, we asked you about your favorite online network. In a tight race, MySpace won the popularity contest, garnering 33% of your votes. Facebook and “I prefer real life” came in tied at 25%, while a small collection of you (17%) chose “other.”
  • The question about text messages left us scratching our heads. Surprisingly, 56% of you responded that you don’t send any text messages in the average week. Only 10% send more than 50 a week. (Five percent of those send more than 100). “Less than 10″ earned 21% of the vote, and “About 10-50″ was accurate for 13% of you.
  • Moving to sports, back in October, we asked you about your choice to win the World Series. We’re happy to report that most of you are excellent prognosticators based on the 45% that picked the eventual champions of baseball, the Boston Red Sox. (The victory delivered happiness–and lots of free furniture–to folks in the Bay State. Click here to read more. Only 18% of you picked the Cleveland Indians, while 9% picked the Colorado Rockies. Some of you (27%) were a bit more honest, picking “I don’t care because baseball is boring.”
  • We know how busy nursing students and nursing professionals are, so we made our next question quick and easy: How many days a week do you get to take a lunch break? As expected, “Lunch break? I barely have time to answer this poll question” came out as the top choice, gathering 48% of the vote. “1 or 2″ was second with 32%, “3 or 4″ was third with 12%, and “5″ finished at the bottom of the heap with only 8%.
  • Food, always a popular topic, was next on the poll menu. In a tight race, stuffing emerged as the most popular dish at Thanksgiving dinner, picking up 39% of your votes. Mashed potatoes were second with 26% of the vote, while the main meal, turkey, grabbed 22%. “Other” got 9%, and cranberry sauce brought up the rear with 4%.
  • We closed out the year with a focus on shopping, holiday-style. Despite society’s growing dependence on computers, only 17% of you responded that you’d be doing most of your shopping online this year. “In the stores” took the prize, garnering 50% of the vote.
  • To kick off 2008, we asked if you would be making a New Year’s resolution this January. So far, 58% of you have responded positively, 33% responded negatively, and 8% still aren’t sure.

They’ll be more fun polls to come this year, so check back often and don’t forget to cast your vote!
