It’s spoken when you stop in at your local coffee shop to grab a fresh brew. It’s spoken to family, friends, and strangers on the street. It’s spoken to patients, managers, other nurses, and anyone else you come across in a hospital. It’s body language. Simple, yet meaningful, body language can make or break your first impression–and your relationship–with someone. Do you know what it means when someone has darting eyes? Or twiddling thumbs? Let’s take a closer look.
Now, not everyone is the same. But here are some basic, general examples of body language you can look for when dealing with people in your personal and professional life. You can tell . . .
If someone is confident
- Direct eye contact
- A firm (but not too firm) handshake
- Good posture
- A face covered with a smile
If someone is shy
- Looking down
- Nervous laughter
- Hands close to body
If someone is bored
- No eye contact or staring around the room
- Yawning
- Slouching posture
- Actions of repetition: twiddling thumbs, tapping feet, etc.
If someone is lying
- Limited eye contact
- Continually touching face or mouth
- Nervous, fidgety behavior
- Looking predominantly right instead of left
If someone is interested/listening
- Leaning forward
- Nodding
- Good eye contact
If someone is angry/aggressive
- Wrinkled forehead
- Crossed arms or palms facing down
- Finger pointing
If someone is stressed
- Nervous habits: tapping, nail biting
- Continually touching face or hair
- Rubbing or massaging neck
