With plenty of applicants and few seats, many see luck as a factor in getting into the nursing school of choice. Some colleges are now making it the only factor, using a lottery system to pick its future nurses.

Modesto Junior College in California is one of those schools. In hopes of increasing diversity among its nursing students, Modesto will be choosing its nursing students based on randomly generated numbers.

According to the Modesto Bee, nursing students in the area aren’t happy with the system because they fear some of the best students may get turned away. The school argues that the rigorous course load will weed out the candidates who may not be up to the demands of the program. Students need to meet a benchmark based on prerequisite courses to be eligible for the lottery.
