For many, it’s become something of a national holiday. Whether you see it as the pinnacle of an entertaining football season or a chance to see some of the most creative commercials of the year, Super Bowl Sunday has become a full day of fun. This Sunday, in the game’s 41st edition, the Chicago Bears take on the Indianapolis Colts down in sunny Miami. And whether you’re heading out, hanging in, or going to party like it’s 1999 (yes, Prince is the halftime entertainment), we’ve got some nuggets of football wisdom that will make you a hit at your gathering.

Some of these nuggets may be obvious to a hard-nosed fan, some may be obvious to a casual fan, and some took some serious research. Either way, crack out a couple of these lines at your soiree, and watch your friends, co-workers, or significant others marvel at your football knowledge. Here we go:

  • The Bears last appeared in a Super Bowl in 1986. In Super Bowl XX, Chicago crushed New England 46-10 at the Louisiana Superdome.

  • The last time the Colts appeared in a Super Bowl was 1971. Known then as the Baltimore Colts, they collected a 16-13 win over Dallas in Super Bowl V in Miami. The franchise moved to Indianapolis in 1984.

  • Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is part of a big football family. His brother, Eli, is a quarterback for the New York Giants and his father, Archie, played most of his football career with the New Orleans Saints. Peyton also has an older brother, Cooper, who was a promising young football player before a spinal cord disorder ended his career.

  • If history is any indication, the game won’t be too close. Only five times in the first 40 games has the winning margin been three points or less.

  • Only once has the game been decided by one point. The New York Giants beat the Buffalo Bills 20-19 in Super Bowl XXV in Tampa, FL.

  • Most likely, the game’s MVP will be on the offensive side of the ball. Only seven times in 40 games has a defensive player claimed the top individual prize.

  • The marching bands from the University of Michigan and the University of Arizona provided the halftime entertainment at Super Bowl I.

  • Billy Joel is slated to sing the National Anthem before kickoff for the second time. He also belted out America’s tune in 1989. The Grambling University Band is the only other two-time performer. They did it in 1968 and 1975.

  • The Colts (15-4) will be the visiting team in the game. The Bears (15-3) will be the home team.

  • No Super Bowl has ever gone into overtime.

  • More than 141 million people watched last year’s Super Bowl.

  • The Super Bowl is the second highest day of food consumption in the United States. Thanksgiving is the highest.

And our pick, in case you’re curious, is Indianapolis in a blowout. Final score: Colts 38, Bears 14. Enjoy the game!
