A new, 20-month program at Grand Canyon University will hopefully provide some quick help for the nursing shortage in Arizona.

Grand Canyon, which is based in Phoenix, will enroll 60 to 90 students in the first year of the program. The students, who will be sponsored by local hospitals who hope to hire them after graduation, need a bachelor’s degree or 90 hours of prerequisite courses to gain admission. The Hospital Council of Southern Arizona is joining forces with Grand Canyon to help get the project off the ground.

If successful, the council will move the fast-track program to other colleges in the state.
